About
Urban cities from LA to Beirut have a huge problem managing their trash. In other words, Lebanon has seen a 30% increase in asthma and skin diseases since just two years of the garbage crisis. To help governments with waste management, we introduce TrashyTrash- a website application that gets data from Twitter to map the "trashiest" places around you. You as someone affected by the trash can simply upload a photo of the trash with the hashtag #trashytag. The photos and locations of trash are stored in a heatmap on our website so that NGOs and government bodies can conduct cleaning campaigns in those areas. Our approach guarantees that cleaning happens in places where trash severely impacts peoples' lives. TrashyTrash guarantees precision by using Amazon Rekognition's machine learning software to check how much trash is in a photo. A red area in the heatmap has a lot of trash; a blue area has less trash. TrashyTrash also ensures live data upload and streaming by using AWS Lambda and Satori. This means that a photo you post on Twitter instantly shows up on our maps.
