About this event

Toyota ITC is inviting Bay Area designers and developers to participate in its first-ever Connected Vehicle Ideathon from 5-10 p.m. Aug. 14 at NestGSV in Redwood City.

The goal is to explore the possibilities for future connected vehicles, and Toyota will be awarding cash prizes for ideas that offer new value to its customers by leveraging one of the following four tech themes: Wearables, SmartHome, IoT, and SpeechRecognition.

This is an Ideathon only and designer-friendly; no coding required. Winning submissions will be captured in slide format, making heavy use of sketches, storyboards, wireframes or similar, and will be judged on the following criteria:

User Merit: How much does your idea benefit our customers?

Originality: We've never seen this because no one has done or proposed this before.

Relevance to Toyota: Unique value automaker can offer that other industries cannot.

PRIZES Four $1000 “Best in Theme” cash prizes awarded to the best idea for each theme.

One $2500 “Best Overall” cash prize awarded to the best of the four "Best in Theme" ideas.

Toyota - ITC Ideathon - Participant Terms & Conditions

The following terms and conditions apply to participation in the TOYOTA-ITC Ideathon scheduled to take place on August 14, 2014 at NestGSV’s offices in Redwood City, CA. Agreement to these terms and conditions is a requirement of participation. ● The TOYOTA-ITC Connected Car Ideathon Contest (“Ideathon”) is sponsored and administered by Toyota InfoTechnology Center, U.S.A., Inc. (“TITC”), 465 Bernardo Ave. Mountain View, CA 94043. The Ideathon is hosted by NestGSV, Inc. (“NGSV”), 425 Broadway St. Redwood City, CA 94063. ● Ideathon contestants must be 18 years of age or older and legal residents of the United States. Past and current employees, officers and directors of both TITC and NGSV, and their respective parent companies, subsidiaries and affiliates and their advertising, promotion, and fulfillment agencies are not eligible to enter or win. Immediate family members and household members of such individuals are also not eligible to enter or win. “Immediate family members” shall mean parents, step-parents, legal guardians, children, step-children, siblings, step-siblings, or spouses. “Household members” shall mean those people who share the same residence at least three months a year. Participation in the Ideathon is subject to all applicable laws. ● Ideathon contestants must compete in teams of at least three members with a maximum of six members. During the competition, each team will be asked to create a slide deck describing only one idea for a new connected car product or service (“Submission”). Each team will be given the opportunity to provide one brief slide presentation of their Submission to the judges describing how it meets our prize criteria. All creation of the materials used for the Submission must be during the Ideathon. ● Submissions and presentation of Submissions will be judged by a panel of judges based upon the following equally-weighted criteria for all four “Best in Theme” prizes: (1) User Merit - How much the idea benefits Toyota customers; (2) Originality of Idea; (3) Relevance to Toyota’s Business - Toyota can uniquely deliver this idea to customers in ways other industries cannot; (4) Relation to one of our four technology themes - Wearables, Smart Home, Internet of Things, and Speech Recognition. In the event of any ties, the winning teams will be determined by the judges based on the quality of the presentation of the Submission. The “Best Overall” prize will be awarded to the team that scored the highest amongst the “Best in Theme” winners. Each member of a winning team, along with all Submissions, is subject to validation by TITC and/or the judging organization, whose decisions are within their own sole discretion and which are final and binding in all respects. Each contestant and each member of a winning team may be required to sign and return, when requested at TITC’s sole discretion, an affidavit of eligibility, a prize/publicity release, and an assignment of rights to a Submission. WINNERS MUST BE PRESENT TO ACCEPT PRIZE OR PRIZE WILL BE FORFEITED. Winners are solely responsible for determining and complying with any tax obligations that may be associated with receipt of a prize. 2 ● ALL PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED TO EACH WINNING TEAM AS A WHOLE AND NOT TO EACH INDIVIDUAL MEMBER OF EACH WINNING TEAM. NGSV, TITC and their respective parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, officers, directors, employees, successors, representatives and assigns are not responsible for any disputes among team members concerning prizes. ● INDEMNIFICATION: By entering, contestants warrant and represent that their team is the sole creator of the Submission and that they have obtained permission from all persons or copyright or trademark owners whose likeness, work or mark are depicted in Submission. Further, by participating in this Ideathon, contestants agree that NGSV, TITC and their respective parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, officers, directors, employees, successors, representatives and assigns shall not be liable for any and all actions, claims, including any third party claims, injury, loss or damage arising in any manner, directly or indirectly, arising from or relating to the Ideathon, including entry and participation, or the acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize. By participating in the Ideathon, contestants agree to fully indemnify NGSV, TITC and their respective parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, officers, directors, employees, successors, representatives and assigns from any and all such claims by third parties without limitation. NGSV, TITC and their respective parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, officers, directors, employees, successors, representatives and assigns shall not be liable for: (i) any injuries, losses or damages of any kind caused by participation in this Ideathon or resulting from acceptance, possession or use of a prize; or (ii) any printing, typographical, administrative or technological errors in any materials associated with the Ideathon. NGSV, TITC and their respective parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, officers, directors, employees, successors, representatives and assigns disclaims any liability for damage to any electronic device resulting from participating in, or accessing, uploading or downloading information in connection with this Ideathon. TITC may prohibit certain contestants or teams from participating in the Ideathon or winning a prize if, in its sole discretion, it determines that a contestant or team has attempted to undermine the legitimate operation of the Ideathon by cheating, deception, or any other unfair playing practices or has taken any action with the intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other participants or TITC and/or NGSV representatives. ● Each team is responsible for determining the disposition of any intellectual property rights developed by its members in the course of participating in the Ideathon. Neither TITC nor its parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, officers, directors, employees, successors, representatives and assigns shall be responsible for mediating disputes that arise relating to ownership of intellectual property rights. ● Contestants agree that TITC and its parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, officers, directors, employees, successors, representatives and assigns have been, or may or will be, engaged in development, preparation, production, manufacture, acquisition, dissemination, sale, use and/or other exploitation of ideas, products or services which include or are similar and/or identical to any features, ideas, material and/or elements contained in a Submission, in whole or in part, and that TITC and its parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, officers, directors, employees, successors, representatives and assigns have the perpetual, unrestricted right to do the same without entitling any contestant or team to any compensation or other right or remedy. As an inducement to TITC to allow participation in this Ideathon, contestants hereby 3 irrevocably waive any claim or right of action against NGSV, TITC and their respective parents, affiliates, subsidiaries, officers, directors, employees, successors, representatives and assigns in connection with the use of any features, ideas, material and/or elements whether or not such features, ideas, material and/or elements are similar and/or identical to those contained in a Submission. ● Contestants agree that they may be photographed and/or recorded by still and/or motion photography by or on behalf of TITC in connection with their participation in the Ideathon, and acknowledge that TITC shall own all rights in such photography and recorded video and sound (collectively, “Material”). Each contestant hereby irrevocably waives any and all rights of privacy, publicity, “moral rights” and any other rights of any kind or nature in connection with any exploitation of the Material, and acknowledges and agrees that the Material (including contestant’s likeness contained therein) may, in whole or in part, be used, reproduced, displayed, performed and otherwise exploited by TITC or its designee(s) on a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide basis through any forms or media (known or unknown) without payment of any compensation to, or further approval by, contestant. Contestant acknowledges that TITC shall rely on the foregoing and contestant shall have no right to enjoin the exploitation of the Material or rescind any rights granted to TITC relating to the Material. ● TITC reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any contestant who violates these terms and conditions and/or acts in any way that would, in any way, discredit or harm the reputation of TITC. TITC also reserves the right to cancel, modify or suspend this Ideathon should fraud or misconduct or other causes beyond the control of TITC corrupt the administration, integrity, security or proper operation of the Ideathon. ● These terms and conditions shall be governed by and interpreted under the laws of the State of California without regard to conflicts of laws provisions. The undersigned contestant hereby affirms that he/she has read, understands and agrees to be bound by the foregoing terms and conditions.
