About this event
OpenNews.Hack Asia brings together journalists, developers, programmers, designers and technopreneurs over three weeks to brainstorm and come up with apps that will enable newsrooms to create, produce, distribute and share news content in new and innovative ways.
Teams of four to six members will journey together through a series of events designed to build knowledge and drive it towards application:
27 Sept: LAUNCH 05 Oct: HACK 09 Oct: PITCH 13 Oct: FINALS
There’ll be talks by industry leaders, plus mentorship from media and industry experts, including Yahoo! Southeast Asia Managing Editor Alan Soon and Golden Gate Ventures Associate Justin Hall. Participants stand to win more than $10,000 in prizes and the chance to enter a three-month accelerator program which includes accommodation and travel to Digital Media Asia 2013 in Kuala Lumpur for the opportunity to pitch in front of the region’s top editors, and much more.
OpenNews.Hack Asia 2013 is a unique hackathon plus accelerator that aims to support media creation and innovation and open new ways for the public to consume and share news. It is organized by WAN-IFRA Newsplex Asia, one of three Newsplexes in the world created by a partnership between Nanyang Technological University’s Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and the World Association of Newspapers and Publishers (WAN-IFRA), working in collaboration with Nhüke.Labs, an experimental project on socially distributed cognition mechanisms. The Finals will be held on 13 October to mark the first anniversary of Newsplex Asia’s launch.
