Why do so few videos hosted online have subtitles or translations? It's clear that such features would greatly benefit many people - for eg if the sound quality is unclear, or users intend to watch it in a noisy environment. Even sites which rely on volunteers like Coursera have trouble attracting enough. This is an example of the tragedy of the commons - once a single user does the transcription / translation, everyone will benefit, but no one wants to do something so troublesome. This project will solve this by allowing users to pool small amounts of money (about $1) that will go towards paying for the service, in the style of kickstarter.
