About

What we've created is a payment card for risk-averse consumers. These are consumers who want a high level of control over their transactions, and don't want to ever have to deal with chargebacks in the event that their card is compromised or otherwise used in an undesired manner. In a typical transaction flow, when Visa receives a transaction request from a merchant they will route it to the issuer of the payment card, who must quickly respond back with an approval or a decline based on basic criteria such as available balance and card state. For our product we leveraged cutting edge features from both the network and the issuer, Visa and Marqeta respectively, to provide a high level of transaction control to the cardholder. First, we leveraged Visa's Advanced Authorization feature, which provides real-time risk scoring for every transaction that's routed to the issuer. Then, we used Marqeta's Just-In-Time funding feature to enable participation in the authorization decision. Now, when the issuer, Marqeta, receives an authorization request from the network, Visa, Visa will pass the risk score of the transaction. Our server then receive that data in real-time from Marqeta and we are expected to quickly respond back with an approval or decline. If the risk score is low we automatically respond back to Visa with an approval. If, however, the risk score is high, what we do is immediately post an in-app notification to the cardholder, allowing them to directly approve or decline the transaction. If they don't respond within six seconds then we decline. This enables the cardholder to directly control the acceptance of transactions that Visa has deemed potentially risky, preventing the possibility of fraud.
