Social security is recognized as a fundamental human right, yet over 70% of the world’s population, more than 5 Billion people, don’t have access to adequate social protection. We demonstrate a social security model implemented as a decentralized application on the Ethereum blockchain. This is a lightweight and highly efficient approach to social insurance which is affordable and accessible for anyone. The model is designed to provide basic coverage for rare, disastrous life events such as death or heavy illness. You can think of it as a first, immediate emergency payment which helps to get through critical times. We present a fully functional prototype which shows that decentralized insurance can be more efficient and cost-effective than traditional social insurance. The model can be fine-tuned, deployed and promoted by governments or non-profit organizations. Depending on the probability of covered events attractive payout rates for participants can be achieved without intermediary costs. Users and operators get the full transparency, security and auditability of a public blockchain application. And it's easy to implement and easy to use.
