Digital Media Asia Hack, or DMA.Hack 2014, is a unique hackathon plus accelerator that aims to support media creation and innovation organized by WAN-IFRA, Newsplex Asia and Nhüke.Labs. DMA.Hack 2014 takes place 14-16 November, just ahead of the Digital Media Asia Conference and Asian Digital Media Awards, 18-21 November at the Orchard Hotel, Singapore. DMA.Hack 2014 began last year as OpenNews.Hack Asia 2013 and is the #1 Digital Media Hackathon in Asia.

WHAT IS IT Digital Media Asia Hack, or DMA.Hack for short, aims to uncover tomorrow’s apps that will reinvent ways of discovering, telling, editing, producing and sharing content. It’s an initiative to support transformational ideas that drive media innovation. This year’s theme is Content Search & Discovery.

WHY ATTEND This is a rare chance to get immediate, direct feedback on what’s confusing, what’s mind-blowing and what you can be doing better with new tools and technologies in content & search. It’s an arena, idea-thon, hackfest and networking event rolled in one - see what others are up to and show what you can do!

Receive specialised guidance from a panel of experienced mentors who will give you substantial tips, thoughts and advice during the competition. You might also connect with others who can help further your idea, so bring on the brainstorm!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE All you have to do is come as an individual or form a team of up to five members to come up with an amazing application around the theme, Content Search & Discovery.

Each team should ideally have professionals or students with skills in app development, design and business/marketing/social media communication such that each member brings a unique talent to the group.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE We’re inviting journalists, technologists, developers, creatives, entrepreneurs, educators, marketers and business people to innovate a range of digital tools to push the boundaries of traditional content creation and discoveries.

Participants and invited guests will include media professionals from the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) member companies, Singapore Press Club, developer communities, technopreneurs as well as faculty and students.

TEAM CRITERIA A team should ideally comprise at least one or more members with experience in these fields: app development (web, mobile or tablet), design or sales/marketing/business development.

You may register as a team of up to five members, or individually. There will be time set aside within the schedule of events for individuals to network, pitch their initial ideas and team up, as needed. If you’re short of any expertise, just come and find someone with the complementary skills to join your group!

JUDGING PROCESS Teams will brainstorm and hack over 14-16 Nov and present their ideas to a panel of industry experts on the final day of competition.

JUDGING CRITERIA The decisions of the judges are final and binding. App proposals will be judged on: • Innovativeness • Feasibility • User experience • Impact on the community they aim to serve • Apps need to address a current need in content search and discovery • Potential for commercial success BENEFITS Publicity for your app and your team - Beyond physical prizes and bragging rights, winners and their winning apps may be featured in local and regional media and websites, promoted across multiple partner channels and social media platforms.

Feedback – Get feedback from jury members and personal team mentors.

Experts – Talk to practitioners who can give you valuable advice on your idea.

Networking – Talk to entrepreneurs, potential angel investors and industry experts.

Mentorship – Top ideas stand to receive professional mentoring beyond the event. ENTRY DEADLINE Registration to compete closes 14 Nov 2014. DISCLOSURE In joining the Challenge, please be aware that you will be presenting your ideas to a panel of judges, fellow participants and other stakeholders. We expect participants to present a compelling case without divulging protected proprietary information.

We have designed the event for participants who are imbued with the start-up spirit and are motivated by the desire to share and learn from others. Participants would also appreciate that copyright law does not protect mere ideas and instead believe in the value of open discussion and its power to fuel more and better ideas. Most importantly, we want everyone to have fun in their quest for the perfect news app and, as pioneers in this field, help lay the foundation for more amazing work to come!
