Two years ago Nicole White (sister of team member Melisa Nieto) began dating a man she met online. She went on a couple of group dates before deciding she felt safe enough to go alone. That first solo date, Nicole...a sister, daughter, friend, aunti, and single mother to two beautiful young boys was murdered. A question that has crossed many of our minds over and over is 'what could have been done to save Nicole?'. Perhaps if she would have had a way to notify others that she was in danger and where her last known location was. We are team #checkMate. Our app is a dating safety/tracking app that is meant to help make online dating as safe as possible by tracking dates, conducting safety checkpoints, and notifying emergency contacts with valuable data that could not only help the users in the case of an emergency, but law enforcement in the case of an investigation. Our app has huge growth potential, with future iterations to include Craigslist and OfferUp exchanges, and as an added feature to online dating applications. We also have a great platform for marketing being that Nicole's story will be featured in a docu-series on the dangers of internet dating by Popkorn in the UK. Next month her story will also be featured on the Discovery channel's Web of Lies. The Nieto family also have several contacts at each of the local news networks who we can contact help announce and application.
